Smith College Bulb Show: An Early Burst of Spring in Northampton, Massachusetts

According to the calendar, spring is still officially two weeks away. One look at the drab New England landscape, and it’s obvious our wait may actually be much longer. Yet, as it has for a century, spring has erupted early in Northampton, Massachusetts, where the Smith College Bulb Show runs through March 21. I was at the show’s opening yesterday, and I have to tell you: I don’t think you’ll find a better way to spend $2 in New England this month. As you’ll see from my photos… and learn from the comments I overheard… Smith students and faculty have outdone themselves this year, and while we’ve had a spell of mild weather, a walk through this display of more than 5,000 blooms will delight your senses and provide you with fragrant memories to call upon when the weather turns brisk again.

While You’re in Northampton… Go Shopping!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Dr. Seuss National MemorialSpringfield, Massachusetts, native and beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss would have been 106 years old tomorrow. Celebrate the man behind the Cat in the Hat and other beloved characters with a visit to the Dr. Seuss National Memorial at the Springfield Museums, where you can look a Lorax in the eyes, put your arm around the Grinch and tell Sam I Am what you really think of his green eggs and ham!

Can’t get to Massachusetts? Read a Seuss tale to your favorite little one. Here’s a list of my favorite Dr. Seuss books.

Great Deals On New England Vacations

I had the wonderful opportunity while I was in Maine last week to film a segment about stretching your travel dollars in New England with ABC 8 WMTW news reporter Keith Baldi. Inspired by the Italian Cooking Class Package I recently featured on my New England Deal Sheet, we taped the segment, which aired last night, at Grissini Italian Bistro in Kennebunkport. I hope you’ll watch the video for some helpful ideas on how to find great deals on New England vacations. Just don’t pay too much attention to my ravioli-making skills. Chef Leonora Palaima assured me that my ravioli trapezoids would “still taste good.”

Ice Harvesting is Wicked Cool

When my husband proposed we spend Valentine’s Day harvesting ice in Maine, my first thought was: He really knows how to show a girl a hot time! The second was: Ice harvesting could be wicked cool. I was right. As you’ll see in this video, harvesting ice using 19th-century tools and techniques remains a cherished tradition in South Bristol, Maine.
